WHOEVER RENTS THIS ROOM NEXT WILL INHERIT SOMETHING UNDEFINED
by Daniel Bailey

tomorrow night i will dig up all the coffins in the cemetery
leave a note that says this is a function of the universe
seeing the past lie still and silent
your dead have been excavated
i will leave the corpses next to their graves to breathe
walk back to the red roof inn covered in funeral dirt

listen to a trumpet sing into my room
as they rebury those they've replaced

i'll turn on the television
i'll turn on the shower and listen to the water
i'll watch barney as the sun sifts through the blinds

then fall asleep and have no dreams that i'll remember
just imagine the kind of existential nightmares a dinosaur must have
