THE ABNORMAL MIND
by Colin James
There is not enough time
to lift the heavy stone,
roll it down the steep hill
wait with trepidation
as it balances uneven terrain,
observe its catastrophic
smashing into the stranger's car,
and make it back home in time
to watch the Andy Griffin show.
THE LEISUREISTS
The girl sat
on the man's lap
for the longest time.
They were watching a Cardinal,
a Popinjay, and a Titmouse
feed on some seeds
left on the patio floor.
The sliding-glass-door was new.
As it grew dark,
they would employ
the nearest flashlight
that was available.
A PASSION FOR ENTERTAINMENT
SUSTAINS US
An afternoon of range riding daydreams
to the edge of ravines
searching out fences to mend.
The sensual hospitality
of year end cattle prices
have us singing songs
we make up the words to.
There is music to your backside,
its axis just needs an audience.
Among the floral motifs
of our tablecloth, forks
tangle with cotton lassos.
